Everyone's a Critic
What do the nation's toughest book critics the customer
reviewers of Amazon.com think of some of the classic
books of literature? (please note, these are all taken from
Amazon.com)
Catcher in the Rye
"The "Catcher In the Rye" has offended myself aswell
as anyone who is human. That might sound like a generlization
but, if you like this book you have to love generalizing.
This book is filled with vulgar speech and has no place
in our classrooms. If a person wants to read it, well then
it is their right but, it should not be forced upon teenagers
to read it."
"I'm sorry, but I didn't like this book. It is supposed
to be some amazing adventure into the everyday life of a
teenager, full of shortcomings, pressures, angst and grief.
IT WAS NONE OF THAT. I thought that it was a horrible peice
of literature. I believe that it showed a whiny young man,
who couldn't take responsibility for himself. He stayed
mired in this self-pity and couldn't see why nothing went
his way. I didn't care for this book at all. I beleive that
the only reason that it caught fire was because it was so
"bad" when it was published that it was banned. This being
banned added a little mystique to it. Everyone read it and
it did well. Oh, by the way, so there is no misinterpretation
of my comments, I am a 17 year old male in California. Yes,
a teenager actually hated the Catcher in the Rye. AMAZING!
I welcome any comments at my e-mail address: hoss@neworld.ne."
"This must be one of the worst books I have read since
Nancy Drew mysteries. The book is meandering and meaningless.
The reader has no sympathy for a spoilt, arrogant little
twerp. Holden spends his high scool years being thrown out
of every institution he enters. He hates everybody from
teachers to his parents, schoolfriends and girls. He is capable
of erratic behaviour, drinking binges and spends money as
if it was water. He comes from a wealthy privileged background
but hates that fact. He is at war with a world which he
thinks has betrayed him - everybody is a "phony" (a word
which the author uses so often that it loses its meaning).
Holden is absorbed in self-pity. The reader is compelled
to take an unsympathetic stance to the whining main character
(also the narrator). Net result-a big "thumbs down" for
this one!"
Les Miserables
"How can this poorly written piece of sap be considered
a classic? The hopelessly over-sentimental plot and characters
made me want to lose my lunch- in this case, the musical
beats the book, hands down."
"I'm sorry to say this too all the naive people who
loved this book, but this is a cheap run-off of the already
crappy book, "The Count Of Monte Cristo" by Alexander Dumas.
Whoever thinks they are a great or intellecual person because
they liked this piece of garbage is really a small and simple
person who gets pleased by an extremely boring, if not,
the most boring book with a cheesy, go happy plot. But hey,
at least you can say that you read a really long book and
show off about that."
The Cat in the Hat
"The Cat in the Hat is quite a disturbing book considering
how young its audience is. This giant mutant cat shows up
at the house while mom is out and proceeds to touch and
play with everything while the kids look on in terror. They
try to get this strange intruder to leave without success,
and the cat proceeds to release two "things" which tear
around the house, destroying everything. Sure, the cat cleans
up everything in the end, but if you or I did this, we'd
be lucky to be arrested and not shot on sight. I would expect
children to have nightmares from this story."
Crime and Punishment
"The only people who should read this book are people
who belong to so called ' intelectual' parties, or people
who have commited terrible crimes - it can replace death
as ' The Capital Punnishment' . If you're intrested in good
literature, smart writing, character analysis, ANYTHING...
search elsewhere. If you shot your Teacher for forcing you
to read this, you have my sympathy."
To Kill a Mockingbird
"In my opinion, this book suffered from various major
problems. First of all, the plot line was weak, The characters
did nothing but wonder around the town tring to coax Boo
Radly out of his house. Second of all, the characters interaction
seemed forced, they behaived like they could not stand each
other. The Third and final deterant is the ending, for almost
200+ pages(out of 281)the almost unbearable wondering ends
with the description of a boring trial and an obscure presentation
of the final climax and resolution. Half way through the
book I was just wishing a bunch of mockingbirds would fly
in and end everyones misery (mine included)."
"It was the worst book I have ever read. Please do
not buy this book!!" --This text refers to the Audio
Cassette edition.
The Old Man and the Sea
"This was the most boring and pointless book I had
ever read. I was forced to read it for English class a year
back. The book has no point except that humans keep fighting
no matter what. The old man is catching a fish for about
80 of the 127 pages. It's a very bad book that shouldn't
have ever been published. I've never read any of Hemingway's
other stuff and am not going to any time soon because of
the lasting effect of this book."
"It was boring. tThe book went on and on for 60 pages
about the fish and the old man."
